Next summer, join us for the Stockbridge premiere of a 30-minute documentary on Bob Leverett’s co-discovery and championing of the old-growth forests of Massachusetts, directed by Colin Hodgson.
Robert T. “Bob” Leverett — for whom the Icy Glen Award is named — is co-founder of the Native Tree Society and co-founder and president of Friends of Mohawk Trail State Forest. An engineer by training and a recognized authority on the science of measuring trees, he chaired the Massachusetts DCR Forest Reserves Science Advisory Committee and co-authored the American Forests Champion Trees Measuring Guidelines Handbook.
A co-discoverer of most of the known old growth in Massachusetts — work dating to the mid-1980s — and co-author of the Sierra Club Guide to Ancient Forests of the Northeast, he now works with climate scientists to measure the carbon that great trees quietly store. His volunteer work consulting for the Town of Stockbridge directly resulted in the saving of Ice Glen’s centuries-old ash and hemlock trees. Ice Glen’s ancient hemlocks and ash have had no truer champion.
